062419: No Open Containers

Considering adopting a cat or a dog? If you never have had a pet before, expect to make some changes. If you have, then you understand.

Whether you have cats, dogs, or both, be very aware of what you leave hanging around that may or not be in your line of vision. One item that we don't generally consider are glasses and cups; jars and containers of any kind, really.

Kitties are curious and they may try to push their heads into into your glass of water, coffee, wine--anything. Bear in mind that, while their whiskers do tell them what they can and cannot get in and out of, their curiosity will get the best of them. One of my kitties loved drinking out of my glass and my dog, Mimi, has the same habit.

Never leave open containers in areas where your pets can get to them.

My friend, Joleen, told me a story about her friend's kitty--Lurch--who got his head stuck in an open jar of cat nip. It took some time, multiple people, and the careful application of soap and not too much water to get the little guy out of the jar. The story ended well, but Lurch did try to do this again. And, again, they were able to get him out of the jar.

Now, Lurch's human buys her kitty catnip in another type of package and well out of the way of the kitty. But, bear in mind, a  jar may not be filled with cat nip and the kitty may not be able to breathe when trapped in a jar or cup. Or using soap and water could lead to dangerous outcomes.

Oh, and dogs can get themselves in the same trouble. I know our Mimi would not shy away from a glass or jar that is just calling to her curiosity.

Take a sweep of your home at least once--better twice, even more--a day and ensure dangerous temptations are out of the way innocent kitties and puppies, and what ever pets you home.
